Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Guidance for Holborough Lakes Residents

  • 2 min read

As more residents make the switch to electric vehicles, we've been receiving a number of questions about installing home EV chargers and charging vehicles safely within the development.

Because Holborough Lakes includes a mixture of publicly adopted highways and privately managed land, there isn't a single answer that applies to every property. The rules and permissions required can vary depending on where you live and where you park.

Contact RMG First

If you are considering installing an EV charger or using a charging cable that crosses communal land, please contact RMG before purchasing or installing any equipment.

RMG assesses each request on a case-by-case basis and can advise whether your proposed installation is likely to be suitable for your individual circumstances.

RMG's Current Guidance

When considering requests, RMG has advised that:

✅ Each request is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

✅ Any charging cable crossing managed land should be no longer than 2 metres.

✅ Charging cables must not create a trip hazard.

✅ Where a cable crosses a pedestrian route, it should be protected using an appropriate charging cable safety mat while charging is taking place.

Following this guidance helps to protect pedestrians, reduce potential hazards and ensure communal areas remain safe for everyone.

Public Highway or Managed Land?

One of the challenges at Holborough Lakes is that some roads and parking areas are part of the public highway, while others are privately managed.

This means that different permissions or requirements may apply depending on the location of your property and parking space. Even if another resident has an EV charger installed, their circumstances may be different from yours.

Kent County Council Guidance

Kent County Council has published useful information about electric vehicle charging, including guidance on on-street charging and other charging options available to residents.
